Overview
This is a devotional/reflective presentation on the 2014 Charis school theme "Let's Go Loco," shown within a timeline of yearly Charis themes (2012 Forge Character → 2021 Choose Life). The talk reframes what "loco" (crazy) really meant and roots it in Christian freedom.
Core Message
"Let's Go Loco" was never about being wild or irresponsible. It was about stepping into freedom — being authentic, braver to try new things, and free from the pressure and fear of what others think. It was an invitation to stop being too stiff, too formal, and too image-conscious.
Biblical Foundation
The freedom comes from Galatians 5:1 — "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm... and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Christ didn't free us to live in fear, pressure, or pretending, but to live fully, honestly, and courageously as who God created us to be. Freedom here is part of identity in Christ and part of the Charis DNA — not license to do whatever one wants.
Freedom and Creativity
Addressing the fair question of whether Charis gives "too much freedom," the talk explains that creativity (a Charis core value) doesn't grow in fear or rigidity — it grows in freedom. Since education often over-emphasizes left-brain skills (logic, structure, analysis), Charis must also nurture the right brain (imagination, curiosity, intuition, courage). "Let's Go Loco" opens a safe space to try, ask questions, and problem-solve creatively.
Cultural Dimension
The theme is placed in dialogue with Javanese culture, which prizes harmony and conflict-avoidance through values like Unggah-Ungguh (proper manners, gentle speech) and Tepa Selira (mindfulness of others' feelings). "Let's Go Loco" encourages being braver in sharing ideas and expressing oneself honestly — still with respect, but without fear of mistakes or of being seen as different.
Closing & Call to Action
Whether someone joined Charis 10 years or 10 weeks ago, they now live in and help carry forward the culture "Loco" created. Since Christ has set us free, the invitation is to live like it — to be the joyful, creative, and courageous Charis this world needs.
